Kybella (ATX-101): Kryptonite for a Double Chin!

Battling a double chin? Well thanks to Kybella®, you don’t have to anymore!

Until recently, the only real way to get rid of a double chin involved starvation and lots of exercise.

Or, for an easier route, you could suck it out with laser lipolysis which is invasive, involves anesthesia, has downtime, and runs anywhere from $800 to $2500.

With the development of Kybella you can now get rid of your double chin in a less painful, low downtime, in-office procedure.

What is Kybella®?

Kybella, known to the scientific community as ATX-101, is an injectable drug, developed by Kythera® Biopharmaceuticals, that is used to dissolve the small pocket of fat under your chin.

The Science of Kybella

Before and After Kybella Treatment

Kybella is a synthetic version of a molecule that’s in our body called deoxycholic acid. Deoxycholic acid is what our digestion system uses to break down the fats in our foods.

When this synthetic version is injected into the fatty area under our chin, it destroys the membrane around the fat cells, causing them to burst and be filtered out through our digestive system.

Over 19 studies, of over 2600 patients, have proven conclusively that there is a definite reduction in double chin fat without concerning side effects.

This treatment is not approved for any area other than under the chin, but some physicians are using it off label to battle back fat (that fat that oozes out on either side of your bra straps).

Kybella is also said to address minor skin laxity.

How it Goes Down

The procedure takes about 15 minutes to do. The physician will simply inject the Kybella in a grid-like fashion into the fatty area under your chin. You may get a little sore, possibly bruised, and maybe a bit swollen but, other than that, it’s a no-downtime procedure.

You just stroll on out and you will see a lessening of the fat in that area over the next couple of weeks.

For some people, one treatment will be enough. For others it could take up to six treatments, one month apart, to lose all the fat. The happy news is that side effects such as minor bruising and swelling seem to lessen with every treatment.

Cost of Kybella

Kybella® runs $900 to $1200 per treatment. The receptionist at my injector’s office had it done and I saw it with my own eyes – the stuff actually works!
