Lip Plumping (Part 1): Lip Plumpers Every Beauty Maven Should Know About

The two most noticeable parts of the face are your eyes and your lips.  Since my eyes are a bit crossy-crossed, and a wee too close together, I’ve made it my business to know all of the best lip plumpers to plump up a thin lip.

Before I got up the nerve to permanently plump up my own lips (coming in a future article!), I settled for some temporary lip plumpers to pillowfy my kisser, and that’s what we’ll talk about today.

Lip Plumping Products

There are products that claim to plump up your lips and, although the results are very temporary, some of them really work. Today we’re going to talk about topical options for plumping up those lips!

Lip Irritants for Fuller Lips

There are three types of products to immediately pump up your lips. The first type that we’ll talk about are called lip irritants. These are products that irritate your lips, causing increased blood flow to the area, making them swell and appear plumper.

Some common lip irritants are cinnamon oil,  ginger, mint (menthol), hot pepper (aka capsaicin), and cayenne pepper. Products with these ingredients tend to make your lips tingle and within a few minutes you’ll notice a rosy hue along with a small expansion of your lip mass.

I like the Lip Venom by DuWop ($21.31), which utilizes both cinnamon oil and ginger for lip plumping.

If you’re looking for a bit more color, another way to go is the Smashbox O-Plump Intuitive Lip Plumper ($21-$38) that goes on clear, but then, depending on the chemistry of your skin, turns a super natural shade of pink.

The Smashbox O-Plump utilizes gingermint for plumping and a slew of antioxidants, like pomegranate seed and marine botanicals , for anti-aging.

I also really like Bite Beauty’s Cinnamon Plumping Lip Oil ($34.50) because it’s not super glossy, it’s 99.9% natural, and smells super yummy.

However, If ya don’t wanna fork over the big bucks to check if this form of limp plumping works for you, there’s a cute little home recipe you can try!

Home Recipe

Melt some Coconut Oil in a small container. Add a bit of ground ginger and cayenne pepper (I like to add a drop of cinnamon oil too), then let harden.  In about 30 minutes you’ll have a nice little homemade limp plumper!

beautyblackbook tipsTIP: You may want to refrain from this home recipe for lip plumping if you plan on puckering up for someone special (unless he’s been a bad boy) and, God forbid, DON’T lick your lips!!

Vasodilators for Lip Plumping

Now, if ‘irritant’ was the only word you saw in the above section, and you prefer a more comfortable lip plumping experience, you may want to consider going the vasodilation route. Basically, it’s like Viagra for the lips!

Vasodilation is when the muscular walls of the blood vessels relax, widening them and allowing them to hold more blood in the effected area. It’s how Viagra works. As a matter of fact, Too Faced Co-Founder and Creative Director Jerrod Blandino came up with the Too Faced Cosmetics Lip Injection Extreme after watching a Viagra commercial!

Ingredients such as green tea, caffeine, niacin, or certain vitamin E derivatives have vasodilation properties and Jerrod used vitamin E derivatives in the Too Faced Lip Injection Extreme ($28) that I highly recommend!

The effect only lasts for a couple of hours so be prepared to re-apply. Still though, the bottle lasted me for months so don’t let the $28 price tag scare ya!

Makeup Tricks to Enhance Your Lips

There are some cool makeup tricks you can try, using products that you may already have in your vanity.

1. Nude Lip Liner

By lining the outside of your lips with a nude liner and lightly smudging the line, you will increase the plain of your natural lips without looking all fake like it would with a darker lip color. I really dig the e.l.f. Studio Lip Definer & Shaper in Natural/Nude ($3).

After lining your lips, simply fill them in with your color of choice!

2. Add a Shade Lighter

Try adding a little Mac lipstick in the color MYTH to your pout, then blend it in. The effect is super feminine and good for almost every skin tone.

3. Super Shiny Lip Gloss

Super shiny gloss adds dimension to your lips. I love the Buxom Full-Bodied Lip Gloss because it has hyaluronic spheres to help promote hydration and fullness, so consider slicking some on for added oomph. 🙂

I love the look, but inevitably my lips come in contact with my hair, which in turn grazes my glasses so, pretty or not, no lip gloss for moi!

4. Illuminate the Edges

Liquid Highlighter on the Outer Edges of your Lips

When dotted around the outline of your lips, specifically on your cupids bow, a liquid highlighter illuminates the outer edges of your lips, reflecting the light, giving the illusion of poutier lips.

I’m loving Benefit Cosmetics High Beam which I’ve been using for years on my lips and cheekbones.

Finally, this next option looks a little bit ridiculous, but I’d be remiss if I didn’t mention it given it’s recent celebrity and all.

Lip Enhancer

MyLipz Lip Enhancer ($19.99)

So silly. The theory behind this product is that by inserting your lips inside, and making a sucking motion, it will swell up your lips. It may work possibly but there are risks to consider.

Like bruising:

Not so pretty before a hot date huh? Or an important business meeting or EVER for that matter. So if you do plan on trying a product like this, you may want to use caution and probably not go all ‘balls to the wall’ like this chic did (hoping that’s a chic).

Maybe if there wasn’t a Jenner attached to it I wouldn’t be so dismissive about it, but the truth is, if you’re willing to go to this extreme you may want to keep an eye out for Part 2 of my Lip Series, where we will discuss more long term ways to increase your lip girth.

Love you! Enjoy! And keep an eye out for Part 2 to learn about more ways to plump up your lips.
