As I look in the mirror at my inch long blah brown (& gray) roots, I long for the honey blonde tresses I had forever ago. After months and months of trimming and growing my roots I’m ready to return to my happy place, safely between gold and golder. Having learned the hard way too many times, I’m going to share some tricks to hair color happiness.
Mask it up Baby!
Two weeks before going in to your colorist, load up on the masks and hydrating conditioning treatments. The more hydrated your hair is the longer it will hold your color. Try the Joico K- Pak Revitaluxe Treatment two weeks before, then again one week before your appointmen for healthy hair that’s ready to soak up some color!
Ixnay on the Heat Tools!
Put your hair on sabbatical and stay far, far away from heating tools such as straightening irons and curling wands and, dare I say it… blow dryers! Ok, no blow dryers may be pushing it, but knowing that these tools dry out your hair leaving it more vulnerable to damage as you color, may ease the blow a bit helping you to take it easy the week before your applying color.
Go In Dirty
Don’t wash your hair for 2 or 3 days before you color for lots of reasons. One, the oil aids in protecting your scalp and your hair when you color. Two, it’s always better for your colorist to see your hair at it’s darkest in order to get you the results that you want.
Three, it’s also worth mentioning that dirty hair is easier to piece out and separate insuring that there are no glaring spots of color missing when your done. But the main reason is that the more natural oil that is in your hair the better your color will grab to the hair (clean hair can make it too slippery).
The rest is up to your hair guru who, once you find, you hang on to for LIFE! (See you Thursday Rebecca!)P.S. Check out my article ‘Olaplex – Dye Your Hair Without the Damage’ and make sure your guru uses that stuff!
